Celebrating a Wolfpack Legacy

The Black Alumni Society commemorates history and contributions of African-American students at NC State University.

The Legacy Award

The Legacy Award honors individuals whose exemplary service in their professional industry, academia and/or community has made an outstanding contribution. These accomplishments contribute to the continued sustainability and success of the NC State Black Alumni Society.

NC State University alumni who will receive Black Alumni Society Legacy Awards for their outstanding accomplishments are:

  • Antonio Caravano (2002): former NC State student body president; deputy executive director of University of North Carolina Tomorrow
  • Antonio Knox (1979): past president of the BAS and charter member of Omega Psi Phi
  • Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young (BS 1989, PhD 1998): national program leader for Biobased Products and Bioenergy Production in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Research Initiative
  • DeWayne Washington (2001): former NFL player for the Minnesota Vikings; active with the NC State Board of Visitors
  • Diane Hill Becton (1973): co-founder of the BAS
  • Elwood Becton (1973): co-founder of the BAS
  • Gayle Lanier (1982): vice president and general manager of Nortel Knowledge Services; serves on NC State Board of Trustees
  • Irwin Holmes (1960): first African-American to earn a bachelor’s degree from NC State
  • Brigadier General Leodis Jennings (1983): serves as the special assistant to the deputy chief of staff G-8 in the Department of the Army
  • Dr. Sheila Smith McKoy (1989): first African-American to receive a PhD in English at Duke University; director of Diversity Programs for the College of Humanities and Social Scienes at NC State.
  • Basketball legend David Thompson (2003) (at above left, in box) will receive the 2009 Elwood and Diane Becton Distinguished Alumni Award.

All BAS Homecoming events will take place during Homecoming weekend, November 5-8, 2009.
