Description:

THE LIMITS OF INTERPRETATION

What's the difference between creation and re-creation?

Between an idea and the realization of an idea?

Between performance and intent?

An original and an adaptation? What limits interpretation?

Dr. J. Mark Scearce uses two major comparisons to discuss these issues- The Balzac short story, Le chef-d'oeuvre inconnu, and its adaptation in the film La Belle Noiseuse by Jacques Rivette. And Glenn Gould's 1955 and 1981 recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations and their use as characters in Thomas Bernhard's novel, The Loser.
