ADVISing uhp students

One of our greatest challenges is making available to all NC State student advisors information about our program and its requirements, the innovations we’ve introduced, and the opportunities available. In addition to the General Information sites and our Student Handbooks, important information that will make your advising job a bit easier includes the following:

What we require of our students

The UHP changed its requirements beginning in the Fall 2003 semester. This has created two distinct categories of UHP students, each with distinct requirements

  • Those who entered the UHP prior to Fall 2003
  • Those who entered the UHP in the Fall 2003 and after

Please make sure you know in which group your advisee belongs.

See the summary of requirements for each group on the Program Expectations page. For further details, refer to the handbook specific to the group to which the student belongs.

Common problems

Continuous honors registration

Pre-fall 2003 students must be registered in an HON course or H-section or file an honors contract each semester until program requirements are completed. If such enrollment is not possible, the student needs to visit his/her honors adviser to obtain a waiver of this requirement.

Fall 2003 and beyond students should register for an HON seminar each semester until they complete their seminar requirements. If such enrollment is not possible, the student needs to visit his/her honors adviser to obtain a waiver of this requirement.

HON 296 & 297 (36x & 37x) Honors Seminars in Science, Technology, and Society
This presents an ongoing problem for our students. Please help them to understand that their degree program will require them to satisfy the Science, Technology, and Society GER with a course having a perspective from outside their curriculum, e.g., an engineering student must take a 296 (or 36x) seminar to satisfy this requirement. The STS requirement is satisfying an Humanities GER for an engineering student, hence the reason the HSS perspective for the STS is required.

Honors Seminars

Please visit our Seminars section to find information about our HON seminars. You may also want to visit our page on Proposing an Honors (HON) Seminar to find out more about creating your own Honors seminar.

Honors (H) Sections of Regular Courses

Individual faculty members and departments provide H sections of regular courses to students campus wide. We do want to remind you that all NC State students also have the opportunity to initiate Honors (H) contracts with instructors, and faculty members have the opportunity to initiate Honors (H) contracts with students. Our Honors Contracts page contains guidelines and forms.

Special Opportunities

Please visit out new Campus Partnerships page for an overview of special opportunities available to UHP students. Created to enhance our students’ academic experience at NC State, these programs, courses, and travel experiences are designed to dovetail into their programs of study. We encourage our students to discuss incorporating one or more opportunity into their Plans of Study.
