New Names for Wolf Village Buildings
Posted: August 24, 2012
In an effort to create a stronger sense of community and Wolfpack pride, University Housing has renamed its Wolf Village apartment complex buildings to reflect species and subspecies of wolves. Previously the buildings were identified by
letters A-H.
“The Wolf Village buildings never had an identity. They were always known as letters since the conception of the construction project,” said Chester Miller, assistant director for University Apartments. “With Wolf Ridge at Centennial opening in fall 2013, we felt it important to provide building identities within the University’s apartment communities.”
University Housing welcomed student input when deciding on the new names. The Wolf Village Neighborhood Association led students in brainstorming ideas, some of which were naming the buildings after famous North Carolinians, native North Carolina trees and North Carolina counties. However, it was the idea of naming the buildings after wolf species that garnered the most student interest.
“In deciding the exact names, we contacted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for guidance,” said Tim Blair, associate director for University Apartments. Of the names, Gray and Red are viewed scientifically as separate wolf species. The remaining buildings are all named after subspecies of the Gray wolf. Caspian is the only non-North American subspecies. Many of these species and subspecies are endangered, mostly due to habitat destruction.
The new names are as follows:
Building A – Arctic
Building B – Baffin
Building C – Caspian
Building D – Red
Building E – Timber
Building F – Mackenzie
Building G – Gray
Building H – Hudson
