Help Your Student Stay on Track

At NC State, there are many resources to help students succeed; however, students are often “too busy” to take advantage of them. As parents, we want you to be aware of the success tips we share with students so that you can subtly make suggestions that will foster student achievement.  We know - your advice may go in one ear and out the other, but it is important for parents to be aware of the messaging we share with students to enable a holistic approach to student development.

To help keep students on track to graduation, here are some simple, proven success principles:

  1. Attend class regularly and turn in assignments on time.  If students do this, they will almost certainly pass the course.  Remember the old Woody Allen quote – “90% of life is just showing up."
  2. Read the assigned textbook (and not the night before the test).  Students should not depend solely on lectures to pull them through.
  3. Utilize resources for assistance such as the Undergraduate Tutorial Center accessible via tutorialcenter@ncsu.edu or other college assistance programs.  Encourage your student to utilize resources at the beginning of the semester!
  4. Make a master calendar for the semester - list all of the test dates and assignment due dates, and build in time to read, to complete assigned projects, and to get some rest.  Students should check their schedules regularly and update as new projects and assignments are added.
  5. Identify a quiet place to study outside the residence hall room – it is too easy to get distracted by a zillion things in the room or by friends calling and stopping by. Students should find a quiet place to study such as the library or other study spaces provided throughout the residence halls and apartments on campus.
  6. Form a study group to review course content prior to quizzes and exams. For many students, this form of learning is more helpful, plus it allows the opportunity to develop friendships.
  7. Visit professors in their offices at least once each semester.  Students should take the time and opportunity to speak to their professors—make up a question, if necessary, but stop by and see them.  Professors want to see students succeed.
  8. If students get in “over their heads” in a course, see the professor or TA immediately – don’t put it off!  Students aren’t in this alone. Professors and TAs can provide advice on getting back on track or locating tutoring assistance, if needed.
