Move-In Weekend 2012

Posted: August 30, 2012

In the scrapbook of life, college memories often stand out. When you first arrive on campus, meet your roommate, unpack your belongings and hug your parents that last goodbye – these moments last a lifetime. During Move-In Weekend 2012, NC State was the backdrop for memories in the making as nearly 3,700 students moved onto campus in the three-day time span.

“I feel a mixture of both excitement and nervousness,” said Erin Tooley, a freshman from Fuquay-Varina. “I think once I get settled in and see what’s going on around campus, I’ll start to figure stuff out,” she added. Tooley’s younger brothers helped cart box after box into Syme Hall. She chuckled, “My sisters decided to stay at home and save the manual labor for the guys.”

Across campus, many similar scenes played out. Parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, godparents, friends and cousins all joined in the effort to move NC state students into the residence halls. While the process may have seemed seamless, it takes months of planning and the cooperation of numerous partners to pull-off its success. “Without the many volunteers across campus including 600 plus Greek Life students, Wolfpack movers, all University Housing staff members along with their children handing out water and ice cream to students and love ones, move in would not be the success it is,” said Jim Pappenhagen, associate director for assignment and marketing. “In addition Dining and Transportation provided valuable assistance.”

Overall, move-in weekend was a busy time for NC State students and parents. By Thursday, August 16, the first day of classes, 7,700 students had moved onto campus.

By the Numbers:

  • Our data shows that Friday and Saturday of move-in weekend 2012 were the most popular move-in days, with nearly 1,500 students arriving  each day. To avoid the rush next year, students should consider moving in on Sunday (a slower arrival day).

  • As of move-in weekend, University Housing was at 100% occupancy. We are proud that so many students want to live with us on campus.

  • More than 4,000 current residents are returning students. It’s exciting to see so many students return for second, third, and fourth years on campus.

  • Our residents are made up of 46% freshmen, 21% sophomores, 20% juniors, 12% seniors, and 1% graduate students.
