Posted: August 31, 2012
The University of Cambridge and Gates Cambridge Scholarship applications will be available September 1. Applications are managed centrally through the Cambridge Graduate Admissions office.
Gates Cambridge Scholarships, endowed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are awarded to outstanding students from outside the UK to pursue graduate study at the University of Cambridge. The program aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.
Scholarships are awarded based on 4 major criteria:
o intellectual ability
o leadership capacity
o desire to use knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to communities and applying talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others
o a good fit between the abilities and aspirations of the applicant and what the University of Cambridge can offer in its graduate program
Who: Graduating seniors or recent graduates from any nation except the United Kingdom are eligible. Field of study is not part of the eligibility criteria. Applicants must meet all entry criteria for Cambridge. Application for scholarship and Cambridge are all-in-one package. No age limit. Average GPA for recipients is 3.9. Applicants should show an understanding of what Cambridge offers and they should contact faculty with whom they want to study prior to applying.
Duration: Depends on the degree, usually 1-3 years. Some 4 year funding is available for PhD scholars.
Number and Amount: About 100 per year (approximately 35 from the United States). Scholarships cover the full cost of tuition and fees at Cambridge and also provide a living allowance, return airfare, a family allowance (if needed), plus funding for conferences and fieldwork.
Application deadlines: Round 1: 16 October; Round 2: 4 December
From the date of submission, applicants will have 14 days to submit additional documents. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all necessary documents are uploaded during this time period.
Eligibility: Round 1: US citizens normally residing in the USA; Round 2: citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally residing outside the USA.
