Faculty Honored with SEAHO Award

Posted: December 10, 2012

Dr. Nacoste

Each year, the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO) recognizes Housing partners who have made significant contributions to  campus residents and the housing organization as a whole. This year, NC State professor Dr. Rupert Nacoste was among the winners of this prestigious service award for his contribution to the residents of NC State University.

Dr. Nacoste is an Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor in the Department of Psychology, but to his students, Nacoste’s title is simply - AMAZING! One student shared, “Dr. Nacoste is truly one of the most interesting and inspiring individuals you will ever have the privilege of meeting. His class opens your eyes to how relationships really are, not how you expect them to be. The entire lecture hall of 200 students is dead silent the entire time, every lecture. It's an amazing experience.”

The class that Dr. Nacoste teaches has become somewhat famous across campus. His class challenges residents to think about relationships and diversity in the context of living on campus. And our residents are doing just that. Residents are opening their eyes and minds as a result of his neo-diversity approach to diversity education and relationship building.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Nacoste serves University Housing residents by providing training sessions, presentations, and workshops in the individual residence halls. These more intimate presentations really challenge students to think about race relations, diversity, gender relations, and more. Nacoste also serves as a faculty advisor for two of University Housing’s high-impact, weekend experiences when students travel out of state to learn about diverse cultures and experiences.

Kala Bullet, Associate Director for West Campus adds, “Dr. Nacoste's support of student development and understanding of diversity has been hands-on, creative, personal and committed. We are so appreciative of his time and expertise in our students' growth in this very important area.”

Dr. Nacoste was presented with the award at the November Campus Life staff meeting.
