H1N1 Flu Information

Student Health has diagnosed around 200 students with influenza or influenza-like illness, presumed H1N1, from the start of the fall semester on August 17th through September 4th. Student Health had an additional 113 cases the week of September 7th, which now puts the count over 300 students. The breakdown includes 23 during week of August 17, 57 during week of August 24, and 116 during week of August 31. Those affected have a variety of majors. Breakdown of those affected includes 56% male, 44% female, 84.7% undergraduate, 64.3% residing off campus, and 35.7% residing on campus at various residences.
Statistics
- Most people under 60 have no immunity to this new strain
- National statistics show the highest number of cases in those under age 25
- The regular flu shot will not protect you
- H1N1 will likely still be hanging around when "traditional" flu arrives in the fall
What to look for
- Fever over 100
- Cough and sore throat
- Body aches and headache
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Fatigue
- Vomiting and diarrhea
(Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, pregnancy, asthma, low immunity, heart, kidney, or lung disease can raise the risk of complications).
How it spreads
- Spread by a SICK PERSON or a SICK THING
- Kissing or sharing a drink
- Coughing or sneezing into the air
- Can live up to 8 hours on things
How to avoid it
- Stay away from sick people
- Clean hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer
- Keep hands away from nose, mouth, and eyes
- Contact your medical provider for an anti-viral prescription (if there has been a known significant exposure)
- Periodically decontaminate your space
