Assistant Director
Position Description
I. General Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for student life and facilities management in a residential area
- Supervise area staff
- Support and implement objectives of University Housing
II. Duties and Responsibilities
A. Supervision
- Directly supervise 2-4 Residence Directors (RDs) and a full-time Office Assistant
- Oversee selection, training, and evaluation of Resident Advisors (RAs), Community Assistant Coordinators (CACs), Community Assistants (CAs), and Administrative Coordinators(ACs)
- Coordinate area staff evaluations
- Conduct staff meetings and regular one-on-one meetings with RDs
B. Training
- Develop and coordinate area and department Fall, Winter, and Spring training
- Coordinate area in-service training/staff development programs
- Conduct crisis management training
- Teach ECD 220 (Topics in College Student Development)
C. Administration
- Manage area budget for training, programming, hall council, supplies, and Villages
- Monitor keys for assigned area
- Coordinate area room assignment procedures and/or Village assignment processes, and process room changes
- Participate in decision-making regarding policies, procedures, programs and facilities
- Coordinate area safety inspections and facility assessment procedures
- Coordinate area administrative functions, including preparation of monthly reports and timely completion of forms and correspondence
- Maintain regular office hours
- Serve as communication link between the Associate Director and the area staff and residents
- Inform Associate Director about critical issues/concerns in the area
- Oversee 24-hour desk operation
- Utilize department computer systems/programs and attend computer training sessions as deemed appropriate
D. Student Leadership Development
- Facilitate leadership development for area hall councils
- Coordinate area hall council training
- Provide support and direction to RDs in their roles as hall council advisors
- Interpret and review hall council constitutions
- Meet monthly with area hall council officers
E. Programming
- Work cooperatively with the Associate Director to ensure an active and varied program of educational, academic, cultural/diversity, safety/security, recreational, and social activities
- Assess the needs of all area residents and develop programming goals to meet identified needs
- Present educational programs
- Provide programming resources to staff and students
- Establish academic, university and community partnerships and assist in creating and developing living & learning community villages
F. Policy Enforcement
- Serve as area judicial coordinator responsible for all area discipline
- Clearly communicate department policy to staff and students
- Maintain area judicial records and prepare monthly area judicial reports
- Conduct Area Conferences and apply appropriate sanctions
- Disperse judicial correspondence for area
- Assign cases to the Residence Directors as appropriate
- Refer cases to the Campus Judicial Board or the Associate Director as necessary
G. Facilities
- Plan renovations with Associate Director
- Coordinate area maintenance requests/operations
- Solicit area facilities improvement ideas from residents and staff
- Prepare area damage reports and billing statements
- Tour buildings and grounds on a regular basis to identify facilities needs
- Develop and maintain a working relationship with the Regional Facility Manager, the Housekeeping Supervisor, and Facilities staff
H. Other Duties
- Respond to emergencies and provide guidance in crisis situations
- Attend student and staff activities, making efforts to get to know area residents and otherwise maintain a high level of visibility
- Assume department "on-duty" responsibilities during residence hall closings
- Establish and maintain working relationships with University departments
- Provide area staff recognition
- Develop and execute area assessment plans
- Attend weekly staff meetings with Associate Director
- Chair and serve on departmental committees and cross-functional teams
- Complete department, functional, and summer assignments (including assistance with summer conference operations and New Student Orientation programs)
- Participate in department research efforts
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director

IV. Minimum Experience/Education
- Masters degree in student personnel or related field
- Minimum of 3 years post-Masters full-time residence hall experience required
- Strong administrative skills
- An understanding and appreciation for diversity
- Advanced knowledge of student development theory
