Community Assistant

Position Description

I. Basic Functions

  • Provide extended Housing services to residents and to maintain safety, security, and behavior standards in the residence halls.

II. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report to work on time and remain functionally alert for the entire shift. The Community Assistant Coordinator is responsible for scheduling all work shifts. He/she will make every effort to prepare a semester schedule that is acceptable to all workers. It is the employee's responsibility to find a replacement when he/she is unable to work or complete a shift. Schedule changes must be reported to the Community Assistant Coordinator. A phone list of all Community Assistant employees will be issued to each staff member.
  • Obtain required Community Assistant equipment from designated area at start of shift. Return Community Assistant equipment to designated location at conclusion of shift. Loss or misuse of Community Assistant equipment may result in dismissal and/or financial responsibility.
  • Serve as either designated rover or office worker:
    • Rover - Perform building rounds as assigned and instructed by the Community Assistant Coordinator. Rounds are walking tours of a hall to (1) verify that exterior doors are closed and locked, (2) confront and/or report incidents, behavior problems and policy violations as instructed by the Community Assistant Coordinator.
    • Office - Staff the hall office and (1) respond to student needs via phone and personal contacts, (2) maintain hall log, (3) register overnight guests, (4) complete clerical tasks assigned by AD/RD or Community Assistant Coordinator and (5) complete maintenance request forms.
  • Attend scheduled training sessions.
  • Record and submit work hours on payroll reporting form. Submit all required employment verification forms in a timely manner.
  • Communicate and cooperate with other members of the residence hall staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

III. Supervision

  • Community Assistant employees are supervised by the Community Assistant Coordinator.
