Loft Options
Understanding the need for students to personalize their living environments, University Housing permits approved loft-style designs in specific residence halls. Residents have the option of either leasing a pre-existing metal loft, or building a wooden loft structure.
Lofts for Lease
Residents can lease durable steel lofts from NC State's Inter-Residence Council for an entire academic year while living on campus. Assembly takes less than 10 minutes and requires no tools. Because these lofts are not made of wood, they don’t have to be inspected by the Fire Protection Division of Public Safety.
Wooden Lofts
- The use of wooden lofts is allowed only in select residence halls.
- Only approved designs will be permitted for construction. Residents are encouraged to review Housing’s pre-approved
construction designs before submitting a request for an inspection.
- Any other loft designs, or alterations to the pre-approved designs, must be submitted to University
Housing Facilities for review prior to construction. If the design meets approval, the completed wooden structure must
still be inspected by the Fire Protection Division of Public Safety.
- Residents must submit an inspection request to the Fire Protection Division of Public
Safety within the first 10 days of the semester (after the first day of classes) for any wooden loft constructed.
- If the structure does not meet the minimum standards, residents will be notified, and will have a minimum of 24 hours to correct the problem(s) before reinspection. Upon reinspection, if a wooden structure again does not meet specifications, responsible residents will be notified and will need to dismantle and remove the structure within 48 hours.
