Who We Are
The Honors Village is a collaborative partnership between University Housing and the University Honors Program (website | blog) providing residents the opportunity to live and learn in a vibrant academic residential community. The Honors Village is a unique living and learning environment helping participants apply class experiences directly to life experiences through: intellectual and affective growth, including personal, academic and professional development; appreciation for demographic and intellectual diversity; and interaction with faculty and staff members. Academic engagement and research opportunities are core to the mission of the University Honors Program, and student experience in the Honors Village assists in completing UHP requirements.
What We Offer
The University Honors Village is housed in Bagwell, Becton, and parts of Berry Halls on East Campus. These halls and the Honors Village Commons combine to form what is affectionately known as "The Quad."
In the Village, first-year residents are assigned upper-class UHP students to serve as mentors (Honors Village Fellows) who assist in the transition to both university life at NC State and the University Honors Program. In addition to mentoring first year students, HVFs also play an active role in sustaining the Village community by co-chairing one Village committee. Village Committees encourage residents to actively participate in the Village Community. Committees include: Academic Enrichment Committee, Community Life Committee, Community Outreach Committee, History and Traditions Committee, Information & Technology Committee.
Through the partnership with Honors Village Fellows, Quad Resident Advisors and Village Committees, the following programs are an example of Honors Village community life:
- Academic/Educational Programs - Semester Book Club, Monthly Faculty Dinners, Used Textbook Swap and Sale, Resume Building Workshop, Pi Day, etc.
- Cultural Programs - Events around NC State and Raleigh, such as Catch 22, Rent, Chicago, My Fair Lady, Vagina Monologues, Asia Night, Ruthie Foster, Brian Brookes Moving Co., etc.
- Cultural Food Nights (Greek, French, etc.)
- Service Programs - Service NC State Volunteer Group, Quad Beautification, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Adopt-a-Family, Relay for Life Team, Hunger Dinner
- Social Programs - CORE, Ice Cream Social, Friday Teas, Fall Fest, Pig Jig, Ballroom Dancing lessons, Semi-Formal
Requirements
With a focus on academic success within the University Honors Program (UHP), students in the UHP are given priority to live in the Honors Village. UHP students can request a non-UHP preferred roommate, and requests are granted as space allows. To return to the Village, residents must be in good academic standing with the University Honors Program. Non-UHP residents can return to the Village as preferred roommates to UHP students.
Students may not list the Quad as preferred bed spaces in MyPack Portal. Students are placed in the Village manually by the Community Director through the UHP Acceptance Process. However, students must complete their housing contract to be placed in the Village.
Because of space limitations, UHP members are not guaranteed assignment in the Village.
Scholar-in-Residence Program
The Scholar-in-Residence Program was established to connect NCSU faculty members and Honors Village students in non-traditional learning environments. The program fosters an environment where meaningful, cross-disciplinary dialogue occurs between residents and faculty members through lunch in our dining hall, evening lectures offered to the community, or enjoying a sunny afternoon on the Honors Village quad.
