SAY Education Advisors will serve as a paraprofessional in the SAY Education Village and be supervised jointly by the Residence Director of Lee Hall and College of Education Administrator. The SAY Education Advisor will assist both University Housing and the SAY Education Village by working with the first year students in the residence hall and in the classroom. Purpose
The purpose of the SAY Education Advisor is to enhance the first year experience for students participating in the SAY Education Village. Through mentoring, tutoring and community building, the SAY Education Advisors will assist the students with their transition from high school to the collegiate environment. SAY Education Advisors will also initiate activities and provide support for programs relevant to child advocacy.
Selection Process
University Housing and SAY Village staff will serve as the selection committee and interview candidates applying for the SAY Education Advisor position.
Qualifications
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Minimum of 30 credit hours completed by fall 2003.
- Have a passion for child advocacy.
- Live on the fifth floor of Lee Hall for the 2003-2004 academic year.
- Have experience living a residence hall setting.
- No active disciplinary action.
- Capable of working independently and in team settings.
- Possesses organization, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates awareness of campus resources and services.
Responsibilities
- Work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
- Help organize and facilitate study groups, group discussions, etc.
- Meet with each mentee at least once every two weeks.
- Work with the RAs to develop and implement social activities for the Village.
- Help coordinate the Speakers’ Series.
- Assist in developing and guiding the SAY Village Council.
- Help students become familiar with University resources.
- Advise and refer residents to appropriate University resources as the need arises.
- Attend periodic meetings with the SAY staff and residence hall staff.
- Attend a weekly meeting with the SAY Program Coordinator.
- Participate in various position and program processes.
Training & Support
- Attend fall training with the Lee RA staff in August.
- Attend in-service sessions held during the year sponsored by University Housing and the College of Education.
- Become familiar with concepts related to mentoring and child/youth advocacy.
