                               Work Hour Exception Form for students and part-time faculty

Work Hour Exceptions for Students and Part-time Faculty

On a memorandum from the Executive Officers on June 24, 2014, work hour exceptions were established for students and part-time faculty. This includes employment at NC State and any other UNC System school. 

Undergraduates- For those working over 20 hours/week during the academic year or 29 hours/week in the summer, a work hour exception form is required (see above link).

Graduates- For those working over 29 hours/week anytime in the year, a work hour exception form is required (see above link).

Part-time Faculty- Following the one 3-hour course=9 hours of work time, faculty that work more than 29 hours per week will require a work hour exception form (see above link).

New ACA Health Plan

Rehired Retirees

New legislation enacted recently by the General Assembly will now have impact on rehired retirees.  Those hired at NC State University who are retirees of the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System, the Optional Retirement Program or any other State of North Carolina retirement systems are impacted by this new legislation. 

The law now states that any rehired retiree who becomes eligible for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plan, must terminate their state-provided retiree health plan.  ACA eligibility applies to anyone who is currently working for NC State and averages 30 or more hours over a 12 month period.  Starting January 1, 2015, any temp hired or rehired working 30 hours or more per week for three months or more will be eligible and offered the ACA health plan.  Again, the rehired retiree will have to forfeit their retiree health plan if ACA eligible. 

It is strongly advised that rehired retirees work less than 30 hours per week to remain under the eligibility criteria for the Affordable Care Act.  Contact the HR Benefits Office at 919/515-2151 or visit go.ncsu.edu/aca for more information.
