Background Checks

The University is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its students, faculty, staff, visitors, and other constituents; and to protecting its funds, property, and other assets. Well-informed hiring decisions contribute to this effort. To facilitate this effort, Employment Services conducts background checks on persons hired for initial employment at the University, as well as current employees who change jobs (transfer) or otherwise become subject to background checks due to changes in their current positions.

Background checks are used only to evaluate candidates/employees for employment purposes and will not be used to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, veteran's status or sexual orientation.

Final candidates for faculty, EPA non-faculty, SPA staff, and post-doctoral positions, as well as final candidates for temporary appointments (other then NC State students where work is incident to their role as a student) are subject to background checks.

Education verification will be conducted on the final candidates for faculty, EPA non-faculty, SPA, and post-doctoral positions. Candidates whose highest degree is from an institution outside the United States should be instructed by the department to contact World Education Services at www.wes.org to request a degree equivalency/verification. The candidate should include the Employer ID # 132829 when submitting the request.

Criminal history and sex offender checks are conducted for all positions. A credit history or a motor vehicle check is appropriate for some positions based on position responsibilities.

Current employees who are convicted of a criminal offense (other than a minor traffic violation) after April 1, 2007 are subject to background checks. Employees are required to report any conviction to their immediate supervisor within 5 days of the conviction. This includes guilty verdicts, guilty pleas, and "no contest" pleas.
