Family and Medical Leave Act. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, which requires employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees for the employee's own serious health condition, the serious health condition of an immediate family member, or the birth or adoption of a child by the employee.
