Term Details - Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)

What was formerly known as Immigrant and Naturalization Service within the federal Justice Department is now known generally as US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS is a bureau within the Department of Homeland Security as of March 1, 2003. The organization's primary responsibility is the admission and control of individuals who not a native-born or naturalized US citizen. These individuals are also be referred to as foreign national or aliens.
