What was formerly known as Immigrant and Naturalization Service within the federal Justice Department is now known generally as US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS is a bureau within the Department of Homeland Security as of March 1, 2003. The organization's primary responsibility is the admission and control of individuals who are not a native-born or naturalized US citizen. These individuals are also be referred to as foreign national or aliens.
