Most healthcare plans consider family physicians, general practitioners, pediatricians, and general internists to be primary care providers. Primary care is distinguished from “specialty” care, which is often focused on a specific health condition or body organ, such as oncologists, who deal with cancer, or cardiologists, who specialize in hearts.
