IACUC Guideline (Revised): December 11, 2008
Changes in vertebrate animal use in research and teaching are inevitable, but protocol changes categorized as significant must not be implemented prior to IACUC review and approval. The PI is responsible for informing the IACUC of any significant changes by filing an Animal Care and Use Protocol Amendment form with the IACUC.
Amendment forms including significant changes will be reviewed per the Standard Operating Procedures for Protocol and Amendment Review. If the Chair judges that proposed protocol changes are significant, the amendment form, along with the original AVAU, and any previously approved amendments, will be forwarded to an approved veterinary reviewer and an IACUC primary reviewer. In some cases, the Chair may judge that changes are sufficiently different from the original protocol that a new AVAU be completed. In all other respects, IACUC review of amendments including significant changes is the same as review of a new protocol application. When the veterinary and primary tiers of review have been completed, a copy of the proposed amendment is sent to each IACUC member to permit opportunity to request additional information or convened IACUC review.
