What are Indirect Costs?
Indirect costs, also called facilities and administrative funds or "overhead' receipts, come to NC State and other research universities as a percentage of the money awarded to us in external research grants. NC State earned about $24 million in indirect costs in 2001. These funds help reimburse the costs of supporting and facilitating research, and are earned according to strict rules monitored by the federal government.

Indirect costs are not discretionary funds. They are earmarked in advance to support the facilities, faculty and staff, and services needed to conduct research.
