IMPORTANT NEWS!
Beginning on January 12, 2009, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will begin providing free access to new antivirus software for campus: Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 for Microsoft Windows and Intego VirusBarrier X5 for Mac OS X.
As part of efforts to continually improve antivirus and malware protection for the campus, NC State University recently selected Trend Micro Corporation as its new provider of client antivirus products. Trend Micro OfficeScan and Intego VirusBarrier provide improved protection and faster updates when new viruses are identified.
Users do not need to take any action at this time. Please continue to visit our Antivirus Resources Web site for updates on this exciting new software!
CAUTION: The installation process for this program has five stages (including the removal of other antivirus programs, if any). These stages must be completed in the order given below. To avoid damage to your computer system, it is also crucial that you finish all the steps in one stage before moving to the next.
CAUTION: If you have Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or Mac OS X 10.4.10, NC State recommends installing Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 instead.
Installation Process
- Updating your operating system

- Installing SAV on Mac OS X
- Running LiveUpdate
I. Updating your operating system
Before you begin working with your antivirus software, make sure that you have recently used Software Update, located in your Apple menu. To find out more about using Software Update, visit the Apple Knowledgebase article on this topic.
II. Uninstalling Norton or Symantec AntiVirus (optional)

III. Uninstalling other antivirus programs
These are general instructions for uninstalling most antivirus programs. See your antivirus program's documentation for additional details.
- Close any open applications before you continue.
- Use the uninstallation program or process recommended by the manufacturer of your antivirus program. Most programs will have a program or instructions stored in the same folder as the antivirus program itself.
- Visit the Web site of the manufacturer of the antivirus program. Download and run any available tools for cleaning up your computer after that program has been uninstalled.
- Repeat steps 1and 2 for each of the other antivirus programs, if any.
IV. Installing Symantec AntiVirus on Mac OS X
- Be sure that you are an administrator for the computer on which you will be installing this program. [How can I tell if I'm an administrator?]
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Open your Web browser.
- Download the antivirus program from http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/files/SAV-MacOSX.dmg (you will need to log in with your Unity ID and password).
We recommend that you save this file to your Desktop.
- When the download completes, close your Web browser and any other programs that are running.
- On your Desktop, double-click on the SAV-MacOS.dmg icon.
- The Symantec AntiVirus for Mac OS X drive image will mount on your computer. Click the white drive icon to open it.

- The drive window will open. To start the installation, double-click on the icon titled Symantec AntiVirus Installer.mpkg.
- The installation process will begin. Clicking the Continue button.
- Read through the Read Me section if you wish, then press the Continue button.
- In the license agreement window, click the Continue button, then press Agree to accept the license terms.

- You will be asked to select a destination to install Symantec AntiVirus. Select your Macintosh HD, then click Continue.

- In the Installation Type window, you will be prompted to perform an Easy Install. Unless you need to change the default install options, click on the Install button.

- You will be asked to authenticate, so the installation can continue.
- When the installation process has been completed, click on the Logout button. When you next login, Symantec AntiVirus will start automatically. It will appear as an icon in your menubar, at the top of the screen.
- Once installation has finished, and you have re-logged in, you should run LiveUpdate. The instructions for running LiveUpdate are listed below.
V. Running LiveUpdate
