Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 for Windows

Beginning on January 12, 2009, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will begin providing free access to new antivirus software for campus: Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 for Microsoft Windows and Intego VirusBarrier X5 for Mac OS X.

As part of efforts to continually improve antivirus and malware protection for the campus, NC State University recently selected Trend Micro Corporation as its new provider of client antivirus products. Trend Micro OfficeScan and Intego VirusBarrier provide improved protection and faster updates when new viruses are identified.

Users do not need to take any action at this time. Please continue to visit our Antivirus Resources Web site for updates on this exciting new software!

CAUTION: The installation process for this program has four stages. These stages must be completed in the order given below. To avoid damage to your computer system, it is also crucial that you finish all the steps in one stage before moving to the next.

Installation Process

  1. Updating your operating system
  2. Uninstalling existing antivirus programs
  3. Cleaning up after uninstalling Symantec or Norton programs
  4. Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 for Windows


I. Updating your operating system

Make sure that you have installed the latest Windows updates from Windows Update (http://update.microsoft.com).


II. Uninstalling existing antivirus programs

Before you can install Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 (SEP 11), you must uninstall any antivirus products that are present on your computer:


III. Cleaning up after uninstalling Symantec or Norton programs

  • If you uninstalled Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition distributed by NC State:
    Use our instructions for Using the CleanWipe Antivirus Removal Utility.

  • If you uninstalled a consumer version Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 product (not the Corporate Edition distributed by NC State):
    We recommend that you read Symantec's page on how to Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.


IV. Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 for Windows

  1. Be sure that you are an administrator for the computer on which you will be installing this program. [How can I tell if I'm an administrator?]

  2. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.

  3. Download Symantec Endpoint Protection 11. You will need to log in with your Unity ID and password. We recommend that you save this file to your Desktop or Downloads folder.

  4. When the download completes, close your Web browser and any other programs that are running. Remain connected to the Internet.

  5. Windows XP users should locate and double-click on the SEP11.exe icon. Windows Vista users should right-click on the icon, and then choose "Run As Administrator."

  6. If you are using Windows Vista, you may see a dialog box, asking for permission to install the program. Click Continue.

  7. If you get a Security Warning message, select the Run button.

  8. The installation process will begin automatically. The install process will take several minutes.

  9. During the installation process, Windows may display various security warnings, such as "Your computer might be at risk." This is normal behavior, and these warnings can be safely ignored.

  10. When the installation finishes, LiveUpdate will automatically launch and bring your antivirus protection up to date.

  11. When LiveUpdate completes, you will be prompted to reboot. Click the Restart Now button to restart your computer.
