IMPORTANT NEWS!
Beginning on January 12, 2009, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will begin providing free access to new antivirus software for campus: Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 for Microsoft Windows and Intego VirusBarrier X5 for Mac OS X.
As part of efforts to continually improve antivirus and malware protection for the campus, NC State University recently selected Trend Micro Corporation as its new provider of client antivirus products. Trend Micro OfficeScan and Intego VirusBarrier provide improved protection and faster updates when new viruses are identified.
Users do not need to take any action at this time. Please continue to visit our Antivirus Resources Web site for updates on this exciting new software!
Install SAV10 on Windows XP only if you have at least 512 MB of RAM. If you have less than 512 MB, install SAV9 instead. Windows Server 2003 users are unaffected.
CAUTION: The installation process for this program has seven stages (including the removal of other antivirus programs, if any). These stages must be completed in the order given below. To avoid damage to your computer system, it is also crucial that you finish all the steps in one stage before moving to the next.
Installation Process
- Updating your operating system
- Uninstalling Norton or Symantec AntiVirus (including LiveUpdate)
- Cleaning up after uninstalling Symantec or Norton programs
- Uninstalling other antivirus programs
- Installing SAV10 on Windows XP
- Running LiveUpdate
- Configuring your firewall ports
I. Updating your operating system
Make sure that you have installed the latest Windows updates from Windows Update (http://update.microsoft.com).
II. Uninstalling Norton or Symantec AntiVirus (including LiveUpdate):
Use our instructions for removing Symantec AntiVirus from Windows XP, Windows Server 2003.
III. Cleaning up after uninstalling Norton or Symantec programs
- Why do I need to run a cleanup utility after uninstalling Symantec and Norton antivirus programs?
Find out why in our Troubleshooting section.
- If you uninstalled Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition distributed by NC State:
Use our instructions for Using the CleanWipe Antivirus Removal Utility.
- If you uninstalled a consumer version Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 product (not the Corporate Edition distributed by NC State):
We recommend that you read Symantec's page on how to Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.
IV. Uninstalling other antivirus programs
If you have other antivirus programs installed, use our general instructions for uninstalling other antivirus programs. You may need to see your antivirus program's documentation for additional details.
V. Installing SAV10 on Windows XP
- Be sure that you are an administrator for the computer on which you will be installing this program. [How can I tell if I'm an administrator?]
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Open your Web browser.
- Download Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1. You will need to log in with your Unity ID and password.
We recommend that you save this file to your Desktop.
- When the download completes, close your Web browser and any other programs that are running.
- On your Desktop, double-click on the SAV10.exe icon.

- If you get a Security Warning message, click on the Run button.
- When you get a message telling you that you are about to install the program, click on OK.
- When the Self-extracting Archive window opens, click on Start. The installation files will be put into a hidden temporary folder named %temp%.

- The installation process will begin automatically. In each window, accept the default settings (unless you have a specific need to change one of them) by clicking the Next button.

- In the license agreement window, mark the button to accept the terms. Click on the Next button.

- In the Setup Type window, make sure that the button for Complete is marked and click on the Next button.

- When the installation process has been completed, click on the Finish button.
VI. Running LiveUpdate
Once installation has finished, LiveUpdate should start automatically after a short delay. If it starts automatically, connect to the Internet and go to Step 4 of the instructions for running LiveUpdate. If it does not start automatically, begin with Step 1 of those instructions.
VII. Configuring your firewall ports
- Make sure that you have an active firewall.
- Open the folder in which the SAV10 files were extracted. The default is the hidden folder %temp%, which you can open quickly as follows:
- Press the Windows key (near the space bar).
- Type: r
- In the dialogue box that appears, type: %temp%
- Press Enter.
- In this folder, double-click on the file named xpsp2-SAV10-firewall.reg. This will open the TCP/IP ports that are required for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition and LiveUpdate to work correctly.
For details on these ports, see Firewall Ports Required by Symantec AntiVirus 10.
For additional information from Symantec on this subject, see Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 firewall prevents remote installation.
If the slanted yellow shield in the system tray at the bottom of your screen has an exclamation mark (!) on it like this:
![]()
then there is a problem with the installation of SAV10. Restart your computer. If the exclamation mark is still present after you restart, contact the NC State Helpdesk for assistance.
