Installing JAWS 6.0 ILM Version
The following instructions will allow you to perform your own installation
of JAWS from the NCSU JAWS server. This will install the application
locally, and the local application will obtain authorization from the
NCSU JAWS Internet License Manager.
System Requirements:
- A computer running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP. JAWS is a
32-bit program, and will not work in the Windows 3.x environment.
- If you intend to use the Eloquence for JAWS software synthesizer,
you need a soundcard compatible with the version of Windows you are
running. If you choose not to use Eloquence for JAWS, then you must
have a JAWS compatible software or hardware speech synthesizer, or
a refreshable Braille display. Note: Without a sound card, you will
not have a talking installation.
- 32 Megabytes of available RAM space is required. 64 Megabytes is
required for Windows 2000 and XP, and 128 Megabytes is recommended.
- VGA or higher-resolution video adapter. Super VGA 256-color is recommended.
- TCP/IP network connectivity to jaws.ncsu.edu
Installation Steps:
- If you are using Windows NT, 2000, or XP, make sure that you are
logged in with Administrator level privileges.
- From the Start Menu, choose Start, Run
- Type the command \\jaws.ncsu.edu\jaws\j600410ILM.exe
- Depending upon your operating system and/or the level of Microsoft
Active Accessibility installed, the JAWS installation wizard may prompt
you to reboot in order to install Microsoft Active Accessibility.
- The JAWS installation wizard will begin and ask if you would like
speech during setup. You will be prompted to reboot if you would like
speech during setup, or you may choose to continue without speech.
- To begin installation, press Enter.
- Read the license agreement, and select Yes to continue.
- For most installations, choose 'Automatic.'
- JAWS will be installed, and you will be prompted to reboot once again.
- After rebooting, log in with administrator level privileges once
again. This will ensure that the installation of video intercept is
completed properly.
Things to note:
- If you require troubleshooting assistance either installing JAWS,
configuring JAWS video intercept, or configuring braille displays,
please contact ricky_lee@ncsu.edu.
- The JAWS ILM server will allow for contemporaneous use of a certain
number of clients, up to the licensed limit. If JAWS is configured
to run as a service on a workstation, this will cause a license to
be constantly in use even when the workstation is not in use. The may
deny others access to the software. When JAWS starts, it will search
for a license server. To force the workstation to look to the correct
location for a license, add the environment variable LSFORCEHOST=jaws.ncsu.edu
.
