Installing JAWS 5.0 Network Client

The following instructions will allow you to perform your own installation of JAWS from the NCSU JAWS server. This is not a full installation of the program to your local workstation, but merely a client to connect and run JAWS from the server.

System Requirements:

  1. A computer running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP. JAWS is a 32-bit program, and will not work in the Windows 3.x environment.
  2. If you intend to use the Eloquence for JAWS software synthesizer, you need a soundcard compatible with the version of Windows you are running. If you choose not to use Eloquence for JAWS, then you must have a JAWS compatible software or hardware speech synthesizer, or a refreshable Braille display. Note: Without a sound card, you will not have a talking installation.
  3. 32 Megabytes of available RAM space is required. 64 Megabytes is required for Windows 2000 and XP, and 128 Megabytes is recommended.
  4. VGA or higher-resolution video adapter. Super VGA 256-color is recommended.
  5. TCP/IP network connectivity to jaws.ncsu.edu

Installation Steps:

  1. If you are using Windows NT, 2000, or XP, make sure that you are logged in with Administrator level privelages.
  2. From the Start Menu, choose Start, Run
  3. Type the command \\jaws.ncsu.edu\jaws50\client\clientsetup.exe
  4. Depending upon your operating system and/or the level of Microsoft Active Accessibility installed, the JAWS installation wizard may prompt you to reboot in order to install Microsoft Active Accessibility.
  5. The JAWS installation wizard will begin and ask if you would like speech during setup. You will be prompted to reboot if you would like speech during setup, or you may choose to continue without speech.
  6. To begin installation, press Enter.
  7. Read the license agreement, and select Yes to continue.
  8. Select the path that contains the JAWS server files. Select Browse and type the path "\\jaws.ncsu.edu\jaws50". Select OK, and then select Next.
  9. JAWS will be installed, and you will be prompted to reboot once again.
  10. After rebooting, log in with administrator level privelages once again. This will ensure that the installation of video intercept is completed properly.

Things to note:

  1. The JAWS network client/server allows users to login into JAWS with their personal settings. If you do not have a user account created, you will be logged into JAWS as 'guest'. To have an account created for you, please contact ricky_lee@ncsu.edu.
  2. Local installations of JAWS allow JAWS to start as a service when booting the computer. This is helpful in computing environments in which workstations are configured to require login, as JAWS will announce the login screen. The network client, however, does not have this feature, and must be started after logging in.
  3. If you require troubleshooting assistance either installing JAWS or configuring JAWS video intercept, please contact Ricky Lee.
  4. The JAWS server will allow for contemporaneous use of a certain number of clients, up to the licensed limit. If your network client is not properly authorized, it will run as a demo version, which will only allow you to run JAWS for 40 minutes. Please contact Ricky Lee if you need network authorization to be installed for you client.
