Installing MAGic 9.0 Network Client

The following instructions will allow you to perform your own installation of MAGIC from the NCSU JAWS server. This is not a full installation of the program to your local workstation, but merely a client to connect and run MAGIC from the server.

System Requirements:

  1. A computer running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP. MAGic is a 32-bit program, and will not work in the Windows 3.x environment.
  2. 64 Megabytes of available RAM space is required.
  3. 256 or higher-resolution video adapter. 16-bit color depth or is recommended.
  4. TCP/IP network connectivity to jaws.ncsu.edu

Installation Steps:

  1. If you are using Windows NT, 2000, or XP, make sure that you are logged in with Administrator level privelages.
  2. From the Start Menu, choose Start, Run
  3. Type the command \\jaws.ncsu.edu\magic\client\setup.exe
  4. Choose MAGic Network Setup. Next, choose MAGic Client Setup.
  5. Depending upon your operating system and/or the level of Microsoft Active Accessibility installed, the MAGic installation wizard may prompt you to reboot in order to install Microsoft Active Accessibility.
  6. The MAGic installation wizard will begin and may ask if you would like speech during setup. If so, you will be prompted to reboot if you would like speech during setup. Proceed with the option of rebooting. This is required to ensure the installation wizard runs correctly.
  7. After the reboot, press Enter to begin installation.
  8. Read the license agreement, and select Yes to continue.
  9. Select the path that contains the MAGic server files. Select Browse and type the path "\\jaws.ncsu.edu\magic". Select OK, and then select Next.
  10. MAGic will be installed. Press Enter to finish the installation.
  11. Press CTRL+ALT+M to launch the application.

Things to note:

  1. The MAGic network client/server allows users to login into MAGic with their personal settings. If you do not have a user account created, you will be logged into MAGic as 'guest'. To have an account created for you, please contact ricky_lee@ncsu.edu.
