Suggestions for Beginners

Your computer account is important!

Since most of the courses you take at NC State University and almost any job you get when you leave NC State will require you to use a computer, everything you learn now about computers should make things much easier in the future. If you are nervous about computers, try to remember that computers do only what you ask them to do and that just about anything you could possibly do "wrong" can be undone.

Ask people around you for help.

Everyone has been a beginner at some time, so don't feel self-conscious about asking questions. Do really learn from other people so you never have to ask the same question twice. And, when someone asks you for help, remember what it was like to be a beginner.

Try things out.

You can't physically hurt the computer if you make a typo, enter the wrong command or close the wrong window.

Stay motivated.

Everyone has problems while first learning something. You may have difficulties with the first few documents you write and email messages you send. Things will get easier as you get used to using the computer.

Practice all C.L.E.A.R. computing strategies at all times.

Go to the Unix Workstation Guide.
