Returning to the default setup (repairing dotfiles)

There are four ways to repair your account if something goes wrong:

First, you can log into an OIT Systems tools page using your Unity ID and password and use the online tool for repairing Unix dotfiles:

https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/tools-bin/repair-dotfiles

Note: This tool does the same thing as the init_dotfiles and repair_dotfiles commands do.

Second, if you made a backup of the file before you changed it, you can replace the active configuration file (the broken one) with the backup you made. For example, to make the backup of your ".mylogin" file replace the active (broken) copy, you would enter:

cp .mylogin.bk .mylogin

The third way to repair dotfiles in your account works only from a workstation:

  1. Select "Session" (at the bottom of the login screen).
  2. Select "Repair Dotfiles."
  3. Log in to the workstation using your Unity ID and password.
Note: You will be asked some questions after login.
  4. Select "No" for the question asking if you want this to be your default session.
  5. Select "Yes" to the question asking if you are sure you want to repair your dotfiles.

The fourth method that (Solaris and Realm Linux) users can use to restore the ".cshrc" and ".login" files by entering the following command at the prompt:

repair_dotfiles

(In addition, Solaris users may use the init_dotfiles command to repair dotfiles.)
