Adding and attaching lockers at login

You can use the add and attach commands to connect to directories or lockers that contain software or text other than what's on the mouse application menu or in your directory. A thorough explanation of the add and the attach commands themselves can be found in another section.

To add lockers at startup, use your favorite text editor (such as TED or Pico) and place the add or attach commands in your ".mylogin" file. If you do not have a ".mylogin" file in your home directory, create one.

For example, if the following lines were in your ".mylogin" file, when you logged in, the imagetools and cc-extras lockers would be added and rmnixon's "tapes" directory would be attached. You'd be able to run image manipulation tools and Computing Services "extras," as well as have an easy way to change to rmnixon's "tapes" directory by typing cd /ncsu/tapes at the prompt.

add imagetools
add cc-extras
attach /afs/unity.ncsu.edu/users/r/rmnixon/tapes

Caution!

Because of the way add works, you should never add another person's directory. If another person's directory has a ".environment" file, the commands in it can be run on files in YOUR account space. If you need to make a directory shortcut to another person's account space, use the attach command.

Note that such use of a ".environment" file is a violation of account policy. See http://www.ncsu.edu/it/rulesregs.
