Managing Old POP Messages
POP email service is no longer available at NC State. If you were using this service but have now switched to
IMAP, all your undeleted POP mail
remains in your AFS file space.
You should be able to view this mail with your IMAP email program in a "local" mailbox.
Here is the procedure for various situations:
Netscape Messenger 4.0 (Unix) on a Unity workstation
- From the popup folder menu, choose the mailbox called "inbox" under the "Local
Mail" sub-section of the folder list. The "Local Mail" folders are listed
after your IMAP folders and before any subscribed newsgroups
- If you wish to copy any of these messages to your IMAP account
- Select the messages you wish to copy. Shift-click to select
a range of messages.
- Click and hold the right mouse button in the area of the selected
messages.
- Move the mouse cursor over the "File Messages" menu choice.
A list of folders will appear.
- Select the destination folder for the messages.
Netscape Messenger on a Windows workstation
Make sure that the "Local mail folder" setting is pointing to the folder
containing your old POP mail. To check, go to the Edit Menu, select Preferences,
and then Mail Servers. On a Windows workstation in a Unity computing
labs, the "Local mail folder" setting should be K:\.elm\folders. If that directory contains your POP mail files, they will be visible under
the Local Mail section of the Netscape folder list.
Eudora Pro
Once you change your account to IMAP you should be able to access your old
mail under the "Eudora Mail" mailbox.
Outlook Express
If you make a new account for your IMAP email, your old email should still
be accessible under the old account. This mail can be copied to the IMAP server
by selecting the messages, right-clicking in the selected area, and choosing
the IMAP mailbox to which the messages should be copied.
