Email Programs that Work with IMAP

Not all email programs (readers, clients) will work with the IMAP protocol. Below is a listing of the four that NC State supports.

Internet access
In order to use any email program, you will need to have Internet access by one of these methods:

• on campus with a direct network connection supported by your college or department
• on campus in a residence hall, through ResNet services
• off campus via modem or broadband. For more information, see Connecting from Off Campus over the Internet.

Basic settings for IMAP email
To use Webmail, you will not need to set up any other email software. To use another email program, get the basic settings for it from the "Other Email Programs You Can Use" section on the Introduction to Email at NC State page. Be sure to set your email program's "Mail check interval" to a minimum of 15 minutes. Using a shorter interval causes unnecessary network traffic and server load. You can also check your email manually from within your email program.

IMAP-compliant Email Programs Supported by NC State

• Webmail
  NC State's Webmail allows you to access your IMAP mail with a Web browser (e.g. Firefox, Opera, Netscape or Internet Explorer). If you have have a Unity account that was set up after Fall 2000, then you already have Webmail. For details on using it, see the Webmail tutorial. To log in to Webmail, go to http://webmail.ncsu.edu.
  
  
• Thunderbird
  This is available in the Unity labs, so you won't need to configure it there. You can obtain a free copy from http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/. To set it up on your own computer, see http://www.ncsu.edu/resnet/email/.
  
  
• Outlook
  This is included with Windows XP. To set this up on your own computer, see http://www.ncsu.edu/resnet/email/.
  
  
• Mac OSX Mail Application
