How IMAP works
- Your email remains stored in your own file space on
the IMAP email server. This is one part of the file storage space (disk quota) you receive as a Unity account holder. See the page on file storage space for step-by-step instructions for re-allocating your space as needed. Also, you can purchase extra email space for an annual fee plus a processing charge.
- You can access
your messages from many locations and types of computers, on or off campus, and manage them (delete, sort, save into folders)
as though they were on your local computer.
- You can read selected portions of an email transmission. For example, if you are reading your email with slow connection from a remote location, you can choose not to transmit a large attachment.
- You can process your email online, and offline or
disconnected options are possible.
Not all email programs are IMAP-compliant, but the major ones are. Also, the
IMAP-compliant ones may not offer IMAP options in the same
way. For more information, see Email Programs that Work with IMAP.
