Subscribing to an Email List Service
To Subscribe
To subscribe to a list, send an email message to the list server at mj2@lists.ncsu.edu (mailto:mj2@lists.ncsu.edu).
Example:
- In the "To:" field, type mj2@lists.ncsu.edu
- Leave the "Subject:" blank.
- To receive list mail at the address from which you're sending your
request, in the body of the message type the word subscribe followed
by the name of the list you want
to subscribe to. If you are not sure of the name of the list,
see the "lists-of-lists" (http://lists.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/lists)
site to see active lists at NCSU.
- To receive list mail at an email address other than the one you're
requesting the list from, in the body of the message type the word subscribe followed
by the listname followed
by the other_email@domain.com.
- Send the message.
What's next?
Based on configuration decisions made by the list owner, you will either
be added to the mailing list automatically or receive notification that
a response is required for the subscription. The response is an added security
measure. In this case, you must send the second message back before you
will be added to the mailing list.
You may also get a message that your subscription is being forwarded
to the list owner for approval. Some lists have waiting lists or policies
about who may subscribe. If your request is forwarded for approval, the
list owner will contact you.
Upon subscribing, you should receive an introductory or welcome message
containing list policies and features. Please SAVE THIS MESSAGE for future
reference; it will also contain exact directions for unsubscribing.
Problems?
The two most frequent problems that people seem to have when they try
to subscribe to a list are:
- Misspelling the word "subscribe."
- Using an incorrect list name.
If you have a problem subscribing to a list and you know that you haven't
done one of the above, please send an email to listman@ncsu.edu (mailto:listman@ncsu.edu)
and let us know. Include a copy of both the command you sent and the error
response you received.
