Authenticated SMTP

Authenticated SMTP allows NC State students, faculty and staff to send email from off campus using the on-campus outgoing email server (smtp.ncsu.edu). You can use this service either from your home or while you are traveling, provided that you've set up your email client for it. Links to setup instructions are provided below. Then all you'll need to use the service are your Unity ID and password.

NOTE: If Symantec AntiVirus v 9.x for Windows is installed on your computer, you will need to disable its Internet E-mail Auto-Protect feature so that you can use Authenticated SMTP. Here's how:

  1. Double-click on the gold shield icon in your system tray (bottom right corner of the screen) to open the Symantec control console.

  2. From the menu tree on the left side, select Configure.

  3. On the right side, select Internet E-mail Auto-Protect.

  4. Uncheck the box labeled Enable Internet E-mail Auto-Protect. Be sure to leave this box unchecked as long as you are using the Authenticated SMTP service.

  5. Select OK.
