Secure File Transfer at NC State
You can transfer files
between computers over the Internet. Even though the word "transfer" is
used when discussing this process, a file is actually copied, not moved,
to a new location. To do this at NC State you will need to use a secure file transfer program such as WinSCP (Windows) or Fugu (Macintosh) and you will need to log in with your Unity ID and password. Transferring files with a Web browser is not secure and can no longer be done over the NC State campus network.
Internet Connection
If you only want to
transfer relatively small files on a limited basis between your home computer
and the campus network, then a dial-up connection will
probably be sufficient. However, if you need to perform other tasks, such
as run applications remotely, you will need a broadband connection and additional
software. For
details, see Remote
Access to Computing at NC State University.
Environment
You can use secure file transfer in both graphical and non-graphical (command
line) environments. With a graphical program, you can transfer a file
by simply dragging and dropping
it into
the desired
folder
at another
location. Graphical programs are available in Windows (e.g., WinSCP), Linux (e.g.,
gFTP) and
Macintosh
(e.g.,
Fugu).
In
a non-graphical
environment, you will need to type in various commands. Select one of the
topics below
to
find out more about secure file transfer.

Help Desk.
