Conserving paper and print quota
Here are some tips that will help you speed up your printing jobs, conserve
your print quota and save paper:
- Work on-screen rather than on paper whenever possible. Read and edit online
and print only final copies. Use email or messaging to communicate with others.
Send and share files via email, secure file transfer and other
system services.
- Preview files with display commands, editors and viewers before you print
them. Most applications produce "wysiwyg" (what-you-see-is-what-you-get)
output. In other words, an on-screen document looks nearly the same as a
printed copy of it.
- Print only the part(s) of a document that you need, using the NXpr
Print Manager and the "Print Selected Text" utility on the
Root Menu. NXpr allows you to print 2 to 4 pages per sheet of paper and also
keeps track of your print quota. "Print Selected Text" prints
only what you have highlighted on-screen.
- Print only the changed pages of a revised file, not the whole thing. This
saves paper and shortens the waiting time for output.
- Check your settings carefully before and after you print. For example,
if you change a setting to print three copies instead of one, make sure you
change it back to one before you print again.
- Choose the printer carefully. If you send a black-and-white print job to a color printer, you will be charged for color printing. See http://print.ncsu.edu/listofprinters.php to find the location of the type of printer you need.
- Do not use a printer as a copier. Copying costs as little as 3 cents a
page, but printing is 6 cents a page.
