NC
State IT Facts for Grantwriters
Often granting agencies require proposal writers to provide information about
the infrastructure available from the NC State campus. The information
below can be useful to grantwriters for this purpose. This page is a work
in progress, so if you have any information to add, or information you
need, please send a request to help@ncsu.edu. Let the
NC State Help Desk know that you have an update or comments regarding this
page.
NC State is a charter member of Internet2. The focus of Internet2 is on building
high-speed networks and creating advanced technology applications for research,
teaching,
and learning.
NC State students benefit from an excellent networking infrastructure
and connections to global networks:
- Port/pillow switched Ethernet connections
are in all residence halls.
- 96% of the 25,130 ports on campus have CAT 5 or
CAT 6 wiring.
- 166 campus buildings (88%) are connected to the network with fiber-based 100 MBps or 1000 MBps Ethernet.
The College of Education (CED)
The College of Education implemented wireless hubs for a Nomadic system
in which users can use laptops, be assigned dynamic IP addresses using
DHCP and authenticate to the campus network. The college has 6 computer
labs for teaching.
The CED has invested in a multipoint
videoconferencing server which will facilitate H.323 conferencing over
the Internet with
Webcams and NetMeeting software.
