2.1. Installing MySQL from RPM Packages on Linux

The following sections covers the installation of Linux using RPMs. For information on using a generic binary package using tar, see Chapter 1, Installing MySQL from Generic Binaries on Unix/Linux. For information on installing from source, see MySQL Installation Using a Source Distribution.

mysql.server can be found in the support-files directory under the MySQL installation directory or in a MySQL source tree. You can install it as /etc/init.d/mysql for automatic MySQL startup and shutdown. See Section 6.2, “Starting and Stopping MySQL Automatically”.
