* 01 *    New Restrictions on Outgoing Email

*********
ITD Systems has announced that starting on Wednesday, October 15th, individual messages that are sent to more than 300 email addresses at once will be blocked at the campus send-mail relays before they are sent.

The new restriction is in response to the rise in email attacks originating from virus infected and other compromised computers on campus.

Campus email list services will not be affected by this restriction. NC State faculty, staff, graduate students and student organizations may use the Majordomo list server for mass mailings to more than 300 addresses. To create a Majordomo mailing list, go to http://lists.ncsu.edu and select "Request a List."

Please send any comments or questions about email procedures to help@ncsu.edu.

* 02 *  EDTECH Thanks!

Provost Oblinger and members of the Deans' Council were among those impressed by the sophistication of the more than 70 exhibits at this year's EDTECH. Additional highlights included a luncheon discussion of the university's Quality Enhancement Plan; Learning in a Technology Rich Environment; and the keynote presentation by Barry Adams of Apple Computer, speaking on "Achievement and the 21st Century Learner." An archived version of Barry Adams' talk and a list of exhibits and presentations with URLs are online at http://www.ncsu.edu/edtech/ .

Many people contributed to making the 8th annual exposition of the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning a celebration of innovation and excellence. Vice Provost Sam Averitt expressed special thanks to the EDTECH steering committee co-chairs Sarah Noell of ITD and Scott Cason of DELTA and to steering committee members Leslie Dare, Division of Student Affairs; Amanda Meetze and Theresa Marie Rhyne of DELTA; Lisa Grable of the College of Education; and Hal Meeks, Harry Nicholos, Rob Gierka of ITD. Leslie Dare also chaired the program committee.

* 03 *   NC State Innovation in SAS Spotlight

******
NC State's SAS Campus Innovation Grant was the first "Grant Spotlight" chosen by SAS to promote its grant program for higher education. NC State was cited for its highly innovative mini-grant proposal process for faculty, staff and students, for its SAS training, and for its extensive SAS Grant website. Laura Grady, ITD Computing Consultant and designated campus SAS contact was praised for spearheading the development of these programs and resources. The SAS article is online at http://www.sas.com/govedu/education/grant/ncsu_grant.html

NC State was awarded a five-year, $1 million SAS grant in 2000. For more information, see the NC State SAS Software and Services website: http://www.ncsu.edu/it/sas

* 04 *   HPC Team Offers New Linux Cluster and Partners Program

*********

Launched in July 2003 in response to the closure of the NC Supercomputing Center, the NC State High Performance Computing (HPC) Program continues to expand the campus resources available to researchers and students working in computational sciences.

On September 30, the HPC team placed a 32-processor (16 node) IBM Blade Center
Linux cluster into production mode for use by NC State faculty and their students. As a next step, a larger 128-processor cluster, currently being tested, is expected to be in production mode before the end of October. The IBM p690 brought into production in July is now being heavily used on campus and by researchers across the state via the NC Reasearch and Education Network. For more information about NC State HPC resources, see http://hpc.ncsu.edu/

The HPC team has also announced a new HPC Partners Program for NC State researchers who intend to purchase HPC Linux clusters and specialized software for their research. The HPC Partners Program offers a cost-effective and innovative model for HPC hardware and software technical support. For more information contact Research Computing Associate, Dr. Eric Sills, eric_sills@ncsu.edu. An HPC Partners brochure is online at http://www.ncsu.edu/itd/hpc/Documents/Brochures/FacultyPartners.pdf
