IMAP e-mail

SOP #900. 31.
Audience: Campus

Service Type:
E-mail

Service Name:
Unity IMAP e-mail

Brief description of service:
ITD provides IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) e-mail services for Unity/Eos e-mail accounts. The IMAP e-mail system stores both new and read e-mail messages on NC State IMAP servers. IMAP e-mail is generally preferred over the older POP e-mail system because, unlike POP e-mail, both old and new IMAP messages can be read and reread from anywhere with an Internet connection.

NC State IMAP users may read their e-mail on the Web by logging in to http://webmail.ncsu.edu and using NC State Webmail. No additional e-mail client software (such as Eudora, Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, etc.) is needed. Most e-mail client software is compliant with IMAP, however, and can provide features not available when using NC State Webmail.

IMAP accounts include IMAP quota (file space on IMAP server). This is in addition to the personal Unity file space provided automatically for all University computing account holders. For information about how to manage or increase this allocation. For more information Unity IMAP email services, see Computing Essentials' Email and Messaging.

Clients eligible for service:
All NC State students, faculty and staff.
As of August 13, 2007, Unity email addresses are designated the official campus email address for all NC State students. This is the email address to which official email communication from NC State will be sent. However, students who prefer to receive their email at another email address can have their email forwarded by using ITD's online Email Forwarding Service.

Type of use:
University business or personal use

Cost:
There is no additional charge for basic IMAP service and IMAP quota. Additional quota can be purchased annually. For more information, see Email Storage Space.

To obtain service:
New students have received IMAP e-mail accounts by default since summer, 2000. As of November, 2001, all newly hired faculty and staff automatically receive IMAP e-mail accounts with their Unity account privileges. Unity POP e-mail services were discontinued in February, 2006.

Rules of use:
All NC State computer and network resources are governed by Administrative Regulations - Computer Use
