RUL #900. 15. 01
Issued by Vice Provost, Information Technology
Audience: Campus
Service Type
Remote Access
Service Name
Remote Access (Dial-Up)Services
Brief description of service
ITD provides a limited number of remote access servers for use by the University. The servers are commonly called ssh login, or dialup servers. They include login.ncsu.edu and ssh.ncsu.edu.
The Remote Access service is intended for use by those wishing to connect to the University's computing environment in text-only mode. Currently, this service is used primarily (63%) by users to access a Unix environment for the execution of specific programs or to simply check e-mail via the Internet.
The remote access machines are a limited resource, and the services are provided for University business or academic work only.
Clients eligible for service
All those with active Unity/Eos accounts
Type of use
Academic use only
Duration of service
As long as account active
Cost
No additional cost
To obtain service
Connect to the remote access servers by ssh connection to one the following addresses:
login.ncsu.edu
ssh.ncsu.edu
Either address will redirect you to the remote access server that has the least amount of activity. This keeps the load balanced on our pool of machines and provides everyone a more efficient login session.Rules of use
All NC State computer and network resources are governed by Administrative Regulations - Computer Use
Remote Access Servers (also known as dialup/login servers)
Recreational use is prohibited:
- Do not play games.
- Do not use chat programs such as IRC, ICQ, or AIM except to access University or course-related
services.- Do not use MUDs, MUSHs, or other recreational Bulletin Boards.
- Do not log into a remote access server and then log into other machines.
Running any CPU- or memory-intensive programs for prolonged periods of time or in the background is prohibited:
This includes, but is not limited to
- setiathome
- rc5des clients
- graphical web browsers such as Netscape
Use of these servers as batch or compute servers is prohibited:
This includes, but is not limited to:
HSPICE
ANSYS
SAS
MATLAB (especially running simulation)
MAPLE (especially running Fast Forier Transforms)
Additional service procedures/restrictions
As stated above, the use of "dialup" remote access servers as batch or compute servers and other memory and/or CPU-intensive programs is prohibited. As of fall 2001, ITD-supported remote access servers are configured to automatically restrict them from being used for these purposes. Applications being blocked include but are not limited to HSPICE, ANSYS, SAS, MATLAB (when running simulations), MAPLE (when running Fast Fourier Transforms).
Those who run these applications have access to the ITD Load Sharing Facility (LSF) service, which is designed to allow users to execute memory and/or CPU intensive applications in a batch environment.
Additionally, the remote access servers should not be used for testing or developing operating system research or class code which contain forks or threads, as poorly or incorrectly written "system fork calls" or "thread_yields" can interfere with the scheduling for the remote access machines and cause them to crash or become non-responsive for our other users.
For more information/documentation
For instructions on using LSF, see documentation provided by College of Engineering at http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/software/app/LSF_5.0
