Communications and Networking Report

• ComTech has a new position that will be advertised later this week. The position is an Associate Director for Data Networking and is needed to assume full-time responsility for the operation of the campus production data network. The Associate Director for Data Networking position will clarify the management responsibilities and reporting lines and will add to the operational efficiencies of the data networking operations group.

The Associate Director for Data Networking will be responsible for the following:

1. The campus' multi-gigabit high-speed production data network. All campus intranet and Internet activities depend upon this backbone infrastructure; its reliability is critical to the business and educational activities of the campus. This responsibility includes coordination and execution of system changes and upgrades.
2. The performance and responsiveness of Network Operations Center (NOC) and Technical Assistance Center (TAC); establish metrics and report data.
3. Personnel management and development of 9 staff, including NOC/TAC manager.
4. Leadership in facilitating collaborative relationship with campus data network clients and other campus IT units; developing policies, procedures, service level agreements, etc.
5. Working partnerships with other ComTech Associate Directors, Information Technology Division's Network Project Director and Computer Operations Director.

• Wireless access was added to the Brickyard in late March. Students used wireless connections on computers to facilitate Student Government elections that were held last week.

• At the end of March new Category 6 wiring was completed in Jordan Hall, McKimmon Center, and Reynolds Coliseum. Robertson, Broughton Hall, and the Administrative Service Center are all scheduled to have the new wiring completed by the end of June.
