NC State’s Information Technology Division/Systems develops and maintains many of NC State’s campus-wide computing systems and services. Campus-wide support for the university’s activities on the World Wide Web are becoming increasingly important as faculty, staff and students find new ways to use the Web to enhance teaching and learning and to provide information and services to local and global audiences. ITD’s Web services group supports more than 250,000 of the university’s Web pages, providing visitors to the NC State Web sites with Web pages that are delivered quickly and reliably 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Web Servers

Information Technology Division/Systems uses the latest technologies to provide NC State Web page and application developers with a high performance Web environment that is highly available and easily expanded. The Web systems currently utilize Sun’s Ultra and Netra-class computers, 100Mb Ethernet connectivity, and the University’s network-based AFS filesystem.

Campus-wide servers supported by Computing Services include

  • www4.ncsu.edu
  • courses.ncsu.edu
  • webassign.ncsu.edu
  • wolfware.ncsu.edu/submit.ncsu.edu
  • www.cgibin.ncsu.edu
  • realaudio.ncsu.edu
  • search.ncsu.edu

Shortened URLs

Some clients who have Web pages supported by these (or other) servers would prefer to have shorter, more memorable URLs. Web services can setup shortened URLs to Web pages from and/or to any of the servers it manages. Contact webmaster@ncsu.edu.

Virtual Hosting

Many of the University’s colleges and research centers have their own dedicated servers maintained by Information Technology Division/Systems staff. These virtual servers are hosted on IT’s high performance Web servers which are coupled with the network-based AFS filesystem, housed on machines in the Hillsborough Building Computer Room, and overseen by a 24 x 7 operations staff. The virtual hosting service enables the information technology staffs in individual college and department units to concentrate on developing local applications and Web page content creation while ITD Operations and Computing Services staff worry about keeping the server up and running.

Units with servers hosted by Computing Services include

  • College of Agriculture & Life Science
  • School of Design
  • College of Forest Resources

WRAP

NC State faculty and staff providing information or services over the Web sometimes want to limit access to certain materials or activities they have placed online. The Web Realm Authentication Protocol (WRAP) system developed by Computing Services allows Unity/Eos-based authenticated access to Web pages delivered by CS servers. This service provides a secure dialog to the campus-wide Kerberos authentication server and allows users who have authenticated once to be able to access any authorized site without authenticating again during that session. For more information contact webmaster@ncsu.edu.

NOTE to Sudents: Restricted access to web based information developed by students and student based organizations is not supported by Computer Services. Students that need to limit access to their web sites may contact the Computer Services Help Desk or telephone 515-HELP(4357).

Search Engine
