* 01 *    Chancellor issues open letter on liability for illegal file sharing

*********

As part of ongoing efforts to educate the campus community on issues related to peer-to-peer file sharing, Chancellor Fox, Provost Oblinger and Vice Chancellor Worsley issued an open letter entitled "Liability for illegal file sharing " earlier this month. The letter is intended to alert faculty and staff as well as students "of the personal risk involved with unauthorized file sharing of copyrighted material."

The letter was published in the online official Bulletin and as a full-page ad in Technician on February 13. Harry Nicholos, university agent for Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) infringement notification, will be giving presentations on the topic to the Staff and Faculty senates in March. For more information about DMCA issues, visit the newly revised Copyright Infringement site: http://www.ncsu.edu/copyright/ For more information about national efforts to curb illegal filesharing on college campuses, see http://www.educause.edu/issues/rfi/pr090203.asp

The ITD Classroom Technology (ClassTech) team will host a ClassTech Open House from 12:30- 2 p.m., on February 20 in 107 Harrelson Hall. Supported by funding from the Office of the Provost, the ClassTech Pilot Project is the result of a proposal from the Classroom Environment Committee to improve the availability and support stucture for instructional technology in general purpose ("110") classrooms. 107 Harrelson Hall is one of 10 ClassTech Pilot Project rooms up-fitted and brought into service this semester. All attending are invited to test-use the equipment, participate in technology demonstrations, and discuss the new support resources with the ClassTech team. For more information, contact classtech@ncsu.edu.

* 03 *    New University Computing Help Desk

*********

The Information Technology Division (ITD) and Resource Management and Information Systems (RMIS) have launched a new campus-wide computing help desk service that will provide computing help to all NC State University faculty, staff and students who use the university’s computing services. The NC State University Help Desk provides a gateway for computing support, especially to those clients who may not know which computing help desk at NC State to contact when they need help.

The NC State University Help Desk does not replace any of the other computing help groups that currently serve the campus; clients may continue to contact the support group to which they are accustomed. The purpose of the new help desk service is to assist NC State clients who may not know whom to call for computing assistance, and to ensure that clients get the computing help they need, regardless of where they initially direct their questions. The NC State University Help Desk is part of a collaborative effort among the university’s IT organizations to improve computing support for clients at NC State.

The NC State University Help Desk is located in Room 208 of the Hillsborough Building, operates from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm Monday – Friday, and can be contacted by phone (515-HELP (4357)), by email (help@ncsu.edu) or via the web (http://help.ncsu.edu).

"End of life" for Norton AntiVirus protection on Windows desktops

********

Over 1000 PCs on campus are running versions of Norton AntiVirus (NAV) earlier than 7.6. As of March 2004, these older versions of NAV will be obsolete and will not receive full support from the parent company, Symantec. Additionally, only NAV versions 7.61.939 and above use the current scan engine (4.1.0.22) which has been adapted to protect systems against the latest viruses, worms and other malicious software.

ITD advises those depending versions of Norton AntiVirus earlier than 7.6 to upgrade their virus protection. If you do not know what version of antivirus software you have installed, you can get the information by either:

The Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition product line superseded the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition product line for Symantec Enterprise customers in 2003. As of May 2003, Symantec AntiVirus became the default antivirus product supported by ITD. It is available for free for the campus community. The software may be used on any university owned Windows or Macintosh computer system as well as any personal computer of any currently employed faculty, staff or registered student of North Carolina State University. For more information and to download Symantec AntiVirus, go to http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/

Macintosh systems are not affected by this announcement. Symantic will continue to support the Macintosh
Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition.

* 05*    Expanded spring and custom workshop offerings

*******

ITD/Computing Services has expanded its computer workshop activities to boost NC State productivity in classrooms, departments and offices.

ITD's Computing Services offers a variety of computer workshops to NC State faculty, staff and graduate students. These free, hands-on workshops develop skills in web site creation, use of multimedia, office productivity, graphic design, and much more.

In addition to the regular schedule of classes, Computing Services also provides custom training for your classroom, department or office at your request. Custom workshops are designed to meet your specific training needs based on the NC State computing environment. Visit the Workshops web site to register for a class or to request a custom workshop http://www.ncsu.edu/it/education.

* 06*    20 MB increase in IMAP

********
Responding to growing requests from Unity IMAP e-mail account users, for faculty, staff, and students: ITD Systems increased the standard IMAP e-mail quota from 30 MB to 50 MB at the begining of the spring 2003-04 semester. Users who in the past had purchased additional IMAP quota had their quotas increased by 20MB. In addition, IMAP performance levels were enhanced by four new IMAP servers. This doubled the number of additional servers and halved the number of users per server.
