"The Evening Garden"
Peter Loewer is a botanical artist (his work is in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie-Mellon) and a writer of books dealing with natural history and gardening. He has written over thirty titles, his book The Wild Gardener winning four awards and chosen one of the best 75 books of the last century by the American Horticultural Society, while The Annual Garden was picked as one of the best fifty books by the USDA Horticultural Library. He has a degree in the graphic arts with a minor in art history. To bring a bit of humor to his horticultural existence, he reviews movies in Asheville and is an expert in horror films. He also has a weekly radio spot on WCQS, Public Radio in Asheville, called "The Wild Gardener."
The
Evening Garden is based on Loewer's book of the same title, soon to be reissued
by Timber Press. It's all about plants with flowers that either bloom in late
afternoon and into the evening or are fragrant at the same time. Perennials and
tropicals are covered, in addition to a number of very strange plants that have
adopted the night as their own time of day.
Friends of the Arboretum lectures are free to those with current membership. There is a $5.00 fee for non-members. Please bring your membership card. We will have a current membership list at the door. Memberships will be available for purchase at the door.
