Bob Lyons, Ph.D.
"Horticultural Gems of the California Coast.....and the Search for Padre Junipero Serra"

California...."The Left Coast,"earthquakes, pop icons, and surfing.....but the other side to this incredible state that occupies most of the Pacific Coast harbors some outstanding gardens, spectacular views, and a climate which would fool any fan of the Mediterranean. The cultivated plant palette exhibits more diversity than a jigsaw puzzle and it seems that just about anything is hardy along the coastline!

Bob will take you on a recent driving tour he took during summer 2001 from the San Francisco Bay area to the state's south-most populous city, San Diego. Along the way you'll experience (in no particular order!) the rarities of Quarry Hill, the expanse of Strybring Arboretum, Sacramento's exotic streetsides, the marvels of the Huntington Library and Gardens, J. Paul Getty's tribute to the marriage of architecture, landscaping, and fine art, the L.A. County Arboretum, Descanso Gardens, the incredible Hearst Castle, Quail Gardens, and the Balboa Park complex in San Diego.

Additionally, join him on his personal goal of photographing the entire network of California's missions founded by Padre Junipero Serra. These uniquely different and functional churches range from the self-proclaimed jewel at Santa Barbara to smaller but equally enchanting missions like that found in Carmel. These missions are often landscaped in authentic reproductions of the gardens of their distant past, and sometimes not! Bob's "mission" has not been completed, but he'll show you a great array of those he has found so far along "El Camino Real!"
