- this enthusiastic & knowledgeable plantsman will share his experiences
in collecting fine plants around the world.

"Interpretation of The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) 1995 England,
Wales, Northern Ireland, Wales Garden Tour - Part I"

Thirty-five people traveled to Europe for the outstanding 1995 tour packed with
many highlights. Two NCSU landscape architecture graduate students on the tour
will do an analysis of the numerous gardens seen and their place in the history
and evolution of garden design.

"Bamboo - Wild and Cultivated"
Dr. James Waddick

Dr. Waddick is a noted plantsman with extensive travel and collection experience
throughout Asia (an iris society sponsored exploration of China lead to a recent
Timber Press book "Irises of China" coauthored with a Chinese colleague). He
will talk about the botanical and horticultural characteristics of this exciting
large
group of plants.

Friends of The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) Lecture
"Using Bamboo in Garden Construction"
Mr. Will Hooker
8 PM, 3712 Bostian Hall, NCSU Campus
Following the earlier lecture on November 16 - we will further explore the possibilities
of the bamboo family. Will is a professor of landscape horticulture in the NCSU
Dept. of Horticultural Science who has been an integral part of The NCSU Arboretum
(now the JC Raulston Arboretum) designing and building many of the garden structures
- and notably the Tropical Hi Phi (trellis sculpture) and the newest garden -
the Paradise Garden with its elegant and graceful bamboo dome. Learn the construction
possibilities of this versatile material.

Come enjoy the mammoth and eclectic decorated tree (with spinal bones of a
seal, "spiders" made
of vanilla orchid bean pods, and Norwegian trolls - among other somewhat untraditional
decorations); good nibbles and hot cider - and of course
visiting with friends and the arboretum staff.

"An Evening with Beverly Nichols"
Mr. Roy Dicks

A chance loaning of a gardening book by the English writer Nichols several
years ago set good friend Roy Dicks off on a passionate quest to collect all
the many
out-of-print books on many different subjects written by this prolific writer.
Roy is noted for his active involvement in local theater circles in both production
and acting - and for a unique Arboretum Friends program he will do an "in character
reading" of classic gardening and plant information selections excerpted from
various Nichols writings.

The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) 1996 Garden Tour
The fifth annual NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) tour will take
us to Northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Southern Germany (Milan to Munich)
with the usual diversity of nurseries, public and private gardens and the best
of botanic gardens and arboreta. No social teas, shopping, or cathedrals - just
lots of pastries and endless plants for hardcore garden crazies. More information
in next newsletter on prices and registration information - but put it on your
calendar now!
Special Notice: In the past we have provided information here on the lecture tour schedule of J. C. so our distant arboretum members might possibly attend if he appears in their neighborhood. His upcoming talks will include the following:
