NOTE - For those of you who have never been to a Friends lecture, try it, you'll like it. Lectures are easy to find with ample lighted parking about 200 feet from the door. We have drawings for many free wonderful plants at every lecture. Come early to solialize and enjoy coffee and cookies before the lectures.

He will be leaving the Arboretum this fall to work with Hines Nursery, Texas as New Products Coordinator. Come see first hand some of the past Arboretum experiences that Tom has been deeply involved with during the past 10 years.

The Third NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) Symposium
"The Global Garden"
Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center (near the Raleigh-Durham International Airport)
The general theme will concern plant explorations and introductions. The keynote speaker will be Mr. Roy Lancaster of England, the most noted plant explorer of this generation; with other talks by Tony Avent, Allen Bush, Logan Calhoun, Panayoti Kelaidis, J. C. Raulston, and Barry Yinger. The cost is $125.00 per person with registration before September 13, 1996. After this date the registration will be $135.00. A renowned epic event in American horticulture with people driving from Massachusetts and Georgia to participate. Over 5,000 extraordinary plants disappear in 3 minutes - don't be late! Friends of The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) Memberships required to participate and they will be sold on site the day of the distribution - come at 4:00 PM to purchase. Bring boxes and bags to efficiently stash and haul your booty.

NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) Perennial Propagation and Design Workshop
This one day workshop is for professionals working with perennials in production and retail sales as well as landscape designers/architects who wish to extend their palate of perennials for the landscape. The workshop includes a morning session with Judith Tyler of Pine Knot Farms. She will discuss propagation techniques for a wide assortment of perennials. The afternoon will be an up close discussion of the world famous perennial border at The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) with curators Edith Eddleman and Doug Ruhren. Learn from some of the region's best horticulturists and designers of perennial gardens. Cost $50.00 per person, lunch included.

"Plant Treasures from the Chicago Botanic Garden Evaluation Program"

The Chicago Botanic Garden has one of the finest true plant research evaluation programs in the U.S. where collections of specific groups of plants are made, evaluated for actual performance in comparison trials (similar to the RHS Wisley Gardens program in England), and published evaluations are distributed to growers and the public. Mr. Hawke will talk about this program and show and discuss the exciting "winners" emerging from this systematic evaluation. (We will have one of them to give away to each member of the audience!)

NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) Office Management Workshop for Horticulturists

Though the NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) works with plants, in order to accomplish much of what he has done in the past 20 years as the director of The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum), Dr. J.C. Raulston is an organized and focused individual. Many people over the years have asked how he organizes his office as well as which books he recommends for a horticulture library. This workshop is designed for both the professional as well as the amateur. Learn how to index slides (J.C. has over 75,000!), organize an office, what are the best books for a horticulture library, and how to prioritize! Cost $25.00 per person.

Ms. Thompson has been a volunteer at The NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) for the past several years. In her second career, she has a wonderful company specializing in floral arrangements, with special attention on the use of native and local plants from the home garden. Come learn from an experienced professional on how to make floral arrangements as well as make a wreath for your home holiday decorations! This workshop will take place at the home of NCSU Arboretum (now the JC Raulston Arboretum) director J.C. Raulston in downtown Raleigh. Cost $50.00 per person, lunch included.

Special Notice: In the past we have provided information here on the lecture tour schedule of J. C. so our distant arboretum members might possibly attend if he appears in their neighborhood. Unfortunately, there will be no out-of-state lectures given in 1996 for a year of local emphasis on other activities (like leading a "life" perhaps!). See you on the road again (more rarely) in 1997!
